COVID-19 Virtual Programs & Activities

Parks and Recreation team is offering a variety of online programs from a variety of resources for all ages. We are working to add even more programs, so check back often for updates. (10/7/2020)

Little Chemist Kit
Ages 4-10 * $35 per child

This At Home Enrichment Kit includes all materials included for 7 hands-on activities. Each of the 7 activities has an instructional video online (links will be provided). Activities include: UV Bracelet, Magic Sand, Snow Powder, Chromatography, Hydrophilic Frog, Pumice Rock, and Dissolving Paper. Some of these activities can be repeated using the same materials after they have dried and returned to their original state. Deadline: October 23. Register.

Online Magic Class - Session A
Ages 5-12 * $13 per child

Professional magician Gary Kantor now teaches his popular magic class ONLINE. This 45-minute virtual class teaches children how to perform a number of mind-boggling tricks using everyday household items. Gary will start by explaining the secrets to the tricks, and then both Gary and the children will practice everything in great detail. The children will have a blast as they learn exactly what to say and do when performing in front of an audience. And since this class is online, it can be taken whenever it is convenient for your schedule. And the videos can be watched again and again. Your entire family can even take this class together! Additionally, be sure to sign up for this class again since new tricks are taught each session. (When you register, you will be told the household items that are needed for the class.) Online Balloon Animal Workshop - Session A
Ages 7 & older * $13 per child

Professional balloon artist Gary Kantor introduces a 45-minute online class that teaches children the techniques needed to take plain balloons and transform them into incredible balloon animals (like dogs, butterflies, fish, etc.). By watching these online videos children will create their own balloon animals, with Gary walking them through each step in the process. This class isn't just for the kids; parents will have a blast if they join the experience. Additionally, you can sign up again since each session makes different animals. (Note: you will need your own balloons and balloon pump. The pump and balloons cost about $13. When you register, you will be given information on places to purchase these.) Theatre Horizon - Virtual Fall Drama Experience
Program hours, ages, and fees range according to how many classes you register for, and what you can afford.

We are offering a variety of after-school virtual classes for students in Grades 1-8. All classes are Pay-What-You-Decide. Classes run in two six-week sessions beginning as early as September 23 and November 4. If you use the discount code: FallCheltenham20 the $5 registration fee will be waived. Registration is on Theatre Horizon's website.

NASA - Academy of Future Space Explorers
Grades K-5 * $115 per child * 6 Weeks beginning November 3, 2020 * 4:45-5:45 p.m.

NASA and Mad Science collaborate to educate the next generation! Children go on a voyage of discovery with unique hands-on activities, and amazing demonstrations that explore the sun and stars, space technology, rocket science, the atmosphere, planets and moons, and more! Registration for this class ends Monday, October 26, 2020. You must register in advance in order to be able to receive the kit in time for the class.  Register.

Secret Agent Lab
Grades K-6 * $115 per child * 6 Weeks beginning November 2, 2020 * 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

Focus on the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Identify and collect evidence, from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Campers will use science to connect the dots and help sniff out the suspects in this hands-on investigation into the science of sleuthing. Registration for this class ends Monday, October 26, 2020. You must register in advance in order to be able to receive the kit in time for the class.  Register.

Creative Movement Dance Class
Ages 2.5-5 * $35 per child * 6 Weeks beginning November 10, 2020 * 4:00-4:50 p.m.

This class consists of: warm-up, movement games, obstacle/movement course, varying genres of music and slight ballet vocabulary will be taught throughout the class. Registration for this class ends Thursday, November 5, 2020. You will need to register in advance to receive the invite to this virtual dance class.  Register.

Ballet Dance Class
Ages 6-10 * $35 per child * 6 Weeks beginning November 10, 2020 * 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

This class is a straight-forward beginner ballet class with warm-up and movement games. (Ballet barre is not needed.) Registration for this class ends Thursday, November 5, 2020. You will need to register in advance to receive the invite to this virtual dance class.  Register.

Science & Engineering: Jr. Mechanical Engineering - Widgets and Gadgets
Saturdays, November 7, 14 & 21 * 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. * Ages 4 - 7 * $80 per child

The Junior Mechanical Engineering classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of energy, materials, and movements. Through open and focused exploration, students explore and construct their own roller coasters, catapult cars, and more. Register.

Science & Engineering: Weekend Workshops: Scratch: Video Sensing
Saturdays, November 7, 14 & 21 * 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. * Ages 8 - 12 * $80 per child

What's more fun than playing an interactive video game? Writing one! Video sensing allows students to design and program their own video games and then test them by interacting with the program via webcam. In this Scratch program, students work together to create their own games, art, and musical instruments while exploring coding foundations. Virtual Chess for Young Players
Mondays & Thursdays * 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

The chess club that usually meets at the Rowland Community Center is using a new online platform to continue the fun and learning. Click here for more information.

Good Wolf Yoga is now offering free or "pay what you wish" quarantine classes on Zoom. Instructor Jeni Smith has been holding Silver Sneakers classes at the La Mott Community Center and classes at her studio prior to the pandemic. Click HERE for the information to participate.
       Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. – Chair Yoga Flow for EVERY BODY! Grab a chair with no arms and a strap (or belt), and work your mobility, strength, balance, flexibility, and focus with seated and standing poses.
        Fridays at 6 p.m. – Wind down from the week with Quarantine Quiet. Grab some blankets for padding, pillows for support, and a belt for length, and roll out your mat for an hour of pranayama (breath retention) and gentle mat-based asana (yoga poses). This class is for anyone who is comfortable getting down onto the floor, sometimes onto your belly.

Nasa at Home offers E-books/essays, virtual tours, podcasts, videos, and more. The Nasa website is worth exploring if you are an adult or a child. In the family sections there are games, drawing lessons, crafting ideas and more.

Free easy science for remote learning. No account or log in needed.
All of the lessons are expertly designed to engage students, achieve learning outcomes, and be easy for teachers to use. There are short mini-lessons that are completely digital and full lessons that include an activity. All of the activities are designed to use simple supplies that families will likely already have at home.

Peanuts! Free Educational Materials for Students in grades K-8
Peanuts Worldwide, the company behind Snoopy and Charlie Brown, is offering free educational materials so students in grades K-8 can learn STEM, languages, arts and social studies alongside the beloved peanuts characters. Lesson plans were created by curriculum specialists at Young Minds inspired as well as in collaboration with NASA.

Now that we are in the green phase and parks are open, Cheltenham Township is asking residents to paint and leave kindness rocks for other residents to find while out enjoying our many parks. When you find one, please take a picture of it and email it to [email protected] as a jpeg or png. Tell us your child's name, age, and location the rock was found. When you find a rock please either leave it for someone else to find, or hide it again. Please remember to leave the rocks in public spaces where they can be found. Thanks! We have received so many inspirational photos from our community of chalk artists and we would like to see more! We are continuing to accept and share inspirational pictures or messages created in chalk from Cheltenham residents.
