Solar Power

Cheltenham Township received a Bronze designation from the national SolSmart program for making it faster, easier and more affordable for homes and businesses to go solar. Cheltenham’s new Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO) include solar requirements to increase generation of cleaner, local energy in the Township.

  • Find a solar professional who will look at your property to determine how much of your energy needs could be covered by solar. As with all major projects, consider talking to at least 3 different professionals.
  • Provide a recent PECO bill to the solar power professional.
  • Incentives may be available to offset the cost of your solar panels. You may be eligible for a federal tax credit. In addition, in Pennsylvania net metering is available through PECO allowing you to sell excess energy you generate back to the grid.
  • Cheltenham’s Solar Photovoltaic Checklist will guide you and your selected solar professional through the installation process. At the end of the installation process PECO will need to inspect and connect your system to the grid.
  •  LaMott and Wyncote Historic District buildings are eligible for solar panels. The Boards of Historic and Architectural Review (BHAR) have written guidelines for installing solar on your home or business.
