Domestic Animal Complaints

The community services officers respond to and follow up on various domestic animal complaints throughout the township. These include but are not limited to:
  • Barking Dogs
  • Dogs at Large / Strays
  • Leash Law Violations
  • Bite Incidents
In most cases these complaints by simply speaking with the parties involved and resolving the issue that way. In other cases written warning notices may be issued, and finally if the situation warrants a citation will be issued and the matter will be taken before a district justice.

Stray Dogs and Cats
The community services officers respond to calls for strays while on duty. Animals captured bearing identification tags or having microchips are taken to the township kennel. The owners will be notified as soon as practical and arrangements made to get the animal returned home. Any owner whose dog is found running at large may be subject to fines of up to $600.00 upon conviction. In addition if the dog is housed in the township kennel for more than 24 hours they may also be charged a “Kennel Fee” of $15.00 plus $5.00 per day for each day the dog is housed. Any dogs or cats not bearing identification are transported to the Montgomery County SPCA located in Roslyn (Abington Twp.) and turned over to them.

Dog Licenses
In the State of Pennsylvania ALL Dogs over the age of three months are required by law to be licensed by the county in which they reside. This license must be renewed each year, unless a lifetime license is purchased. Applications for license can be obtained by contacting the Community Services Unit at (215) 885-1600 ext. 478

Rabies Information
In the state of Pennsylvania ALL Dogs and Cats over the age of three months are required by law to be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinations are given by your pet’s veterinarian and are typically good for 1 or 3 years. Low cost vaccinations are also available through the Montgomery County Health Department at certain times during the summer months. Please visit the health departments website for more information.
