Elkins Park East Streetscape Enhancements

Cheltenham Township will review the May 2008 version of the plan at the Public Works Committee at 8PM on May 13 and the Economic Development Task Force at 7PM on May 14, both at the Township Administration Building, located at 8230 Old York Road in Elkins Park.

Residents and business people previously reviewed a proposed design for streetscape improvements to the Elkins Park East Commercial District, located near the Elkins Park Train Station, on Monday, February 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Elkins Park Free Library Community Room on 567 East Church Road.

The proposed improvements include decorative pavers for sidewalks; colored, stamped crosswalks and plazas; large planters; pedestrian-scaled streetlights and attractive street furniture, including benches and trash receptacles.  Like the township’s recent transformation of Wesley Plaza in Glenside, the Elkins Park East streetscape enhancements are designed to attract both shoppers and compatible new businesses to the commercial district as part of the township’s overall economic development initiative.  Once completed, township officials will use the approved plans to seek grant funding to implement the project.

In 2006, the Cheltenham Township Board of Commissioners  hired Carroll Engineering Corporation to prepare engineering and design plans for the construction of streetscape and traffic calming improvements in the Elkins Park East Commercial District, which is the vicinity around the Elkins Park Train Station.  The initial plans are available at right.  The consultants revised these plans based on input from a public meeting in November 2006.
