Free Steering Wheel Locks to Hyundai Owners

Posted on Monday January 23, 2023

Since late 2022 a viral national social media trend has led to increased auto thefts throughout the nation, and particularly the greater-Philadelphia region. Cheltenham Township has been significantly impacted by this trend and are seeing a drastic spike in the theft of Hyundais and Kias. In an effort to remain
proactive CTPD contacted the manufacturers of the impacted vehicles in an effort to see if they could offer any type of relief to our residents.

Today, we are happy to announce that Cheltenham PD was selected as the first Department in the region to partner with Hyundai and Kia to offer our residents steering wheel locks– FREE OF CHARGE. These locks are intended as a visual and physical deterrent to any would-be thief. CTPD received a supply of locks from Hyundai late last week. Locks from Kia are in transit and will be offered once they are received.

Hyundai USA released a statement which reads in part: “Hyundai is also providing free steering wheel locks, as available, to select law enforcement agencies across the country for distribution to local residents who own or lease affected models. We apologize for the inconvenience to affected customers. Owners may also bring their vehicles to a local Hyundai dealer for the purchase and installation of a customized security kit."

At this time steering wheel locks are only being offered to Hyundai owners. We expect to be able to open the program to Kia owners in the near future and will make an announcement at that time.

To receive your free steering wheel lock please see the following criteria:

  • This program is offered to RESIDENTS OF CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP ONLY
  • Steering wheel locks must be picked up in person at the Police Admin. Building (8230 Old York Rd.)
  • Resident must present valid State Issued ID to prove Cheltenham Township residency. AND
  • Residents must present a valid registration to prove ownership of a Hyundai.
  • One (1) lock is being offered per vehicle.
