Through grants and donations, and the hard work of volunteers, Curtis Arboretum is being restored.
Over the past few years, Curtis Arboretum has been receiving a refresh thanks to donations and hard work from multiple parties. On Saturday, November 13, volunteers from the Friends of Curtis Arboretum (FOCA) gathered in the upper parking lot near Curtis Hall to plant 15 trees donated by PECO, as well as one tree each from Burke Brothers Landscape Contractors, Inc., and Colibraro Landscaping, Inc.
Led by FOCA’s Building and Grounds Committee, which was responsible for selecting the specimen trees and planning the event, volunteers gathered on the beautiful fall morning to plant the trees before the afternoon’s forecasted wind and rain struck. Members of Cheltenham Township’s Public Works Department pre-dug the holes and brought the trees to the arboretum, but volunteers ranging from high school students to senior members of the community placed the trees in the holes, backfilled them, mulched the trees, and added deer fencing and watering bags to ensure they get a good start to thrive in their new locations.
Trees planted include: Greenspire Linden, Princeton Elm, Sawtooth Oak, Bur Oak, Swamp White Oak, American Yellowwood, Chinese Fringetree, and American Beech.
Since the adoption of the Curtis Arboretum Conservation and Landscape Management Plan in December 2016, Cheltenham Township has partnered with Jeffery Miller Catering, the Friends of Curtis Arboretum, and granting agencies such as PECO, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and Montgomery County to restore Curtis Hall to be a prestigious event venue and restore and enhance Curtis Arboretum’s landscape and environmental impact.
Cheltenham Township has also implemented a tree donation program. Since its inception in spring 2021, 7 trees have been donated to Curtis Arboretum through this program, 4 of which are to be planted this month.
