Cheltenham Township Honors Commissioner Drew Sharkey

ELKINS PARK, PA,On December 18, 2019, the Cheltenham Township Board of Commissioners along with many others honored Commissioner Drew Sharkey for his 12 years of outstanding service as a Commissioner of Cheltenham Township at the monthly Board of Commissioners meeting.

The Cheltenham Township Board of Commissioners honored Sharkey with a resolution that read with “immense appreciation and respect for a lifelong Cheltenham Township resident of Glenside, for his 12 years of outstanding service as a Commissioner of Cheltenham Township.” Bryan Havir, township manager at Cheltenham Township, presented flowers to Sharkey’s mother Patricia, and a college chair engraved with a plaque to Commissioner Sharkey from the commissioners.  Havir also presented Sharkey with a park bench from Township staff with a plaque that will be placed in a park of Sharkey’s choosing in Ward one. Numerous elected officials and colleagues honored Commissioner Sharkey at the December 18th meeting, or provided citations. 

Honors presented to Commissioner Sharkey at the Board of Commissioners Meeting:

  • Presentation of a Citation from U.S. Congresswoman Madeleine Dean.
  • Presentation of a Resolution from the Montgomery County Commissioners.
  • Presentation of wood teak bench on behalf of the Township Staff.
  • Sam Valenza, on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Commissioners, with presentation of a gift
  • Stan Ropski, on behalf of the Montgomery County Association of Township Commissioners, with presentation of a gift

Citations below were not formerly presented:

  • A Citation from Lt. Governor John Fetterman.
  • A Citation from Pennsylvania State Senator Art Haywood.
  • A Citation from Pennsylvania State Representative Steve McCarter.
  • Rick Schuettler, on behalf of the Pennsylvania Municipal League

 J. Andrew Sharkey was sworn in as the Commissioner representing Ward one on January 8, 2008. Commissioner Sharkey was elected by his peer commissioners in Montgomery County to serve as the president of the Montgomery County Association of Township Commissioners in 2013, after serving as vice president for four years. In 2015, the Montgomery County and Delaware County township commissioners elected him president of the Eastern Association of Township Commissioners. This culminated in 2015 with Mr. Sharkey's election as president of Pennsylvania State Association of Township Commissioners. These organizations set legislative goals, advocate for them in Harrisburg and run statewide training events for municipal officials. In 2016, Governor Tom Wolf awarded Commissioner Sharkey the Governor's Award for Excellence in Local Government. In 2017, Governor Wolf appointed Sharkey to the Governor's Commission on Local Government.

Prior to serving as commissioner, Sharkey was a member of the Cheltenham Economic Development Task Force, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Committee, and worked on the Township Main Street program, chairing the Organization and Development Committee. He worked tirelessly with Downtown Glenside and neighbors to run the Glenside Arts Festival, Winter Fest and the Food Truck Festival. His dedication and enthusiasm to his community makes him a favorite resident and community advocate. He also serves on the Glenside Fire Company Board, the Custis Woods-Twickenham Civic Association, the Downtown Glenside Community Partnership boards and the Penn State Alumni Admissions Council.
