PECO Announced Project to Enhance Electric Service Reliability for Customers in Cheltenham
Work Will Commence in Late June of 2019

PECO announced beginning in June 2019, it will be working in Cheltenham Township to install advanced equipment and enhance the local electric distribution system. This project will ensure continued safe and reliable service for customers in Cheltenham Township. Work will be performed by a qualified PECO contractor from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the project is expected to be completed by the middle of 2020. This effort is part of PECO's commitment to provide safe and reliable energy for customers and the communities they serve. Part of of the work involves upgrading and installing new equipment to enhance the local electric distribution system in the area.

In an effort to keep residents  informed PECO we will be hosting an
open house on June 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Elkins Park Elementary School, located at 8149 New Second Street, Elkins Park to discuss how this project will improve electric service in your neighborhood. During this open house residents  can meet with the PECO project team and ask questions. There is no formal presentation, so arrive anytime between 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Background (From PECO) PECO continuously monitors the  electric system to identify projects to help ensure safe and reliable service for  customers in the communities served. As part of this work, we will be upgrading our aerial electrical equipment to continue to meet the needs of our customers in Cheltenham Township.

 About the Project:

  • More than $3 million will be invested to enhance the local electric distribution system for the area.
  • Work will include pole and cable replacements.
  • The majority of this work will occur along Montgomery, Harrison, Union, Cadwalader, and Park Avenues, High School, Ashbourne, Mill, Gerard, Church, Waring, Cedar, Fairview, Westview, Upland, Stahr and Shoemaker Roads.
  • This project also will include tree trimming and tree removal to reduce the number of outages caused by trees and other vegetation. This work may involve rear property tree trimming and removal.
  • Tree trimming work is scheduled to begin in late June 2019, and work on electrical equipment, including poles and wires, is scheduled to start once tree trimming work is complete.
  • Customers will be notified if any tree trimming or removal may occur on their property. We will work directly with those customers to develop a plan that works for PECO and the property owner.
  • PECO works with certified arborists, employs professional foresters and adheres to national ANSI A300 standards when managing tree trimming and removal.
  • Crews will also be installing reinforced tree-resistant aerial electric lines. These lines are stronger than traditional lines and can better withstand falling trees and tree limbs.
  • Work will typically occur from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • The project is expected to be completed by the middle of 2020 and work will be performed by a qualified PECO contractor.

What does this mean for PECO customers?

  • PECO will work closely with members of the community and local officials to minimize the impact as much as possible.
  • In some cases, crews may need to temporarily interrupt service to safely complete some of this work. We will work with customers to ensure they are informed in advance of our activities and any planned interruptions.
