PennDOT Roadside Vegetation Management Spraying for Properties on Sate Roads Will Begin

The PennDOT Roadside Vegetation Management program is underway for the year 2019. PennDOT will be spraying state roads between April and June of 2019 as part of its Roadside Vegetation Management Program. PennDOT does not provide a schedule in advance of the roadside spraying.

The purpose of spraying is to beautify the state’s roadways to make them safer and more accessible, and enhance the scenery.  PennDOT works with Penn State University’s College of Agriculture to screen different herbicides and test different blends for efficiency. All herbicides receive approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A certified PennDOT applicator monitors all contractors who spray the chemicals. See copy of PennDOT brochures enclosed.

Residents living along one of the state roads listed below may be impacted by spraying. If residents choose not to have PennDOT spray herbicides to kill invasive plant species, such as Canada thistle or poison ivy, they must fill out an application for a right-of-way vegetation management permit and agree to cut back the vegetation on their property, so it does not interfere with visibility for motorists. If you complete a right-of-way vegetation management permit, you will not be exempt from spraying if you fail to maintain vegetation in the right-of-way of your property to PennDOT specifications.

Applications for permits are available on PennDOT’s website at
Applications should be mailed to:
