About the Lecture
For 170 years after the William Penn Land Grant to William Frampton, the rolling fields of today's Curtis Arboretum were legacy Quaker farmlands. The name "Chelten Hills" was affixed to the area in 1854 by an abolitionist entrepreneur, Edward M. Davis, who sold estates for country homes to the wealthy businessmen of Philadelphia. Prominent Philadelphia banker Abraham Barker purchased his estate in that year and named it "Lyndon." Following his dramatic bank failure in 1890, the estate was purchased by an enterprising publisher, Cyrus Curtis, who constructed his own million-dollar manse on the property. This lecture will trace the history of the Arboretum as is progressed from colonial agrarian age, through the Gilded Age, and into the 21st Century as a verdant haven for the residents of a gracious Philadelphia suburb.

About the Event
Over the past six months, Cheltenham Township and Jeffrey Miller Catering have renovated this grand facility to help preserve it for future generations and make it a premier event destination in the region. This event offers the opportunity to explore the renovations made possible by this exciting public-private partnership.

About Jeffrey A. Miller Catering
Jeffrey A. Miller Catering (JAM) was started in 1980 as a brunch-in-bed school project by founder Jeff Miller. While studying entrepreneurship during the school year, Jeff used his summers to train in some of the best kitchens in the world, working in New York, London, and a Michelin three-starred restaurant in the south of France.

The creativity in presentation, emphasis on freshness, and attention to detail that made these restaurants great is what inspired Jeff to try to reinvent catering, abandoning an old style of boring, cookie-cutter banquet food in favor of vibrant culinary offerings with flavors from around the world. Although what started as a one-man band is today a thriving organization, this spirit of innovation continues to guide our kitchen and all aspects of the JAM experience.

About the Friends of Curtis Arboretum
