PARKING GARAGE GRANT.  Congressman Chakah Fattah (second from left) presents SEPTA and Cheltenham Township officials with an $836,000 federal grant to fund engineering and design of a proposed parking garage at the Glenside Train Station.            Township officials worked with SEPTA, Montgomery County and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to complete a feasibility study last year for a three and one-half story garage featuring at least 385 parking spaces and 10,000 square feet of retail space.  In addition to improving public transportation by increasing parking for SEPTA riders, the proposed garage would serve the township’s economic development goals by expanding retail space.  On hand for the recent presentation at the Glenside Train Station platform were (left to right) John McGee, SEPTA Chief Officer of Ridership/Marketing; David G. Kraynik, Township Manager; Ruth Littner Shaw, Cheltenham Main Street Manager; Harold Lichtman; Cheltenham Economic Development Task Force Chair; Andrew B. Furman, SEPTA Parking Administrator; Commissioner Paul R. Greenwald, Board President; Bryan T. Havir, Assistant Township Manager and Commissioner Robert C. Gerhard, Jr., representing Glenside.

The major improvement under study includes the construction of a parking garage at the Glenside Station.   An implementation plan for enhancing economic vitality and the revitalization of the Glenside commercial district is also being developed as a part of this study.  The railroad station is an integral part of the commercial district.  Thus, this study seeks to combine the station planning and revitalization efforts into a single project.

The Glenside Station Parking Garage Feasibility Study is a joint effort of the Montgomery County Planning Commission, Cheltenham Township, and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), in cooperation with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). Its goal is to propose an economic revitalization strategy for the commercial district through the redesign/renovation of the Glenside Station and the adjacent historic Roberts Block

The Glenside Station is located at the northwest corner of Glenside Avenue and Easton Road.  The planning/commercial revitalization component of the study will focus on seven acres of combined public and private lands surrounding the Glenside station.  This area includes the existing station area as well as the three blocks bounded by Ruralside Avenue, Mt. Carmel Avenue and Easton Road.  The privately owned lands within the project area include a series of architecturally significant buildings known as Roberts Block.
