The student intern program is coordinated through the Professional Standards
Division and allows college students interested in the law enforcement
field the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the daily activities of a police
department. This is a non-salaried assignment normally required as part of a degree
program in a criminal justice curriculum.
In addition to assisting the Professional Standards Division with research and
development assignments the interns will have the opportunity to observe officers
from the various divisions and the units working within them.
Assignments with the Patrol, Detective, and Administrative Services Divisions will
include:
Ride along assignments with police officers on patrol
Observing training with the canine and SWAT units
Community Policing Unit
Highway Safety Unit
Police radio
Attendance at court proceedings
Clerical duties
Must be a full time student from an accredited college or university
Major in Criminal Justice or law enforcement related field with an interest in working in law
enforcement at the local level.
Must be willing to work at least 2 - 8 hour days per week
Must have initiative to go out on training with various units
Proficient computer skills
Students must submit a letter of interest requesting an internship with the Department
A recommendation letter from the Faculty Staff advisor or a Faculty member is required
Student’s resume
Required documentation:
Current photo identification
Proof of medical / health insurance
Certified copy of birth certificate
Complete and sign the required liability and confidentially release forms
and pass a limited background / criminal history investigation screening
