The Community Policing vehicle is a 24 foot 1996 Ford E350 van, with a fiberglass exterior. In addition to a long list of standard equipment, it has cooking and bathroom facilities, dual heating and separate air conditioning systems, a generator and auxiliary batteries, plus the ability to tap standard AC power, and enough seating and table space to qualify as a true "office on wheels." Mobile and hand held police radio equipment are also included. Future equipment plans include a lap top computer, as well as a color TV/VCR combination for screening crime prevention and other audio-visual materials for the public. The van will serve as a mini police station throughout the community and has made many appearances around the Township. Featuring an "open door" policy, the unit welcomes citizens' visits to discuss concerns or to just meet the officers. In future, the unit will also host community outreach efforts, such as health screenings, county services and crime prevention tips. Completely mobile, the unit will be able to target any problem areas that may arise. Special attention will be focused on certain residential areas and along the business districts in the Township. Greater police visibility in the business districts should enhance customers' sense of security. The unit will be complemented by a Township-wide street lighting survey this year, designed to enhance public safety with the placement of additional streetlights where appropriate. The Price is RightVirtually the entire cost of the vehicle was funded through a $57,000 state grant obtained by State Representative Lawrence Curry. Special communication equipment and a power generator enable the vehicle to serve as an emergency command post, if necessary. |
