Abandoned Vehicles

Abandoned vehicles are an eyesore and a nuisance that detract from the overall appeal of our community. Our Patrol Offices regularly check their sectors for abandon vehicles. The sooner a vehicle is identified and posted as abandon, the sooner the process to remove the vehicle can begin.

According to the Pennsylvania’s Motor Vehicle Law, a vehicle is considered abandon under the following circumstances:

The vehicle is left on a highway or public property in an inoperable condition for 48 hours or longer.

The vehicle is left illegally on a highway.

The vehicle is left on a highway or public property for 48 hours or longer and does not have a valid inspection sticker, license plate, or VIN number.

If you have a complaint about an abandon vehicle, call Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600.

A Police Officer will follow up on your complaint to determine if the vehicle meets the criteria to be considered an abandon auto. If the vehicle is local, Police will attempt to contact the owner and have the vehicle removed from the highway. If we are unable to contact the last listed owner of the vehicle, a Police report is made, and our Highway Safety Unit will post the vehicle with an orange abandon sticker.

If you have a question concerning an abandon vehicle, you can contact the Highway Safety Supervisor.
