Application procedure for entry-level police officer

When there is an opening for the position of Police Officer the Township will announce an examination for entry level.  The examination date will be announced on cable channel 42, the Township Web Page, and will be advertised in the major newspapers.

Candidates pay a fee of $25.00 to take the exam and can apply for one or all of the participating municipalities.  The requirements for appointment as a Cheltenham Township Police Officer are as follows:

Ø     Must be a US citizen

Ø     Twenty-One years of age by date of appointment

Ø     High School Diploma or GED

Ø     Must possess a valid drivers license

Ø      Must be of good moral character

WRITTEN EXAMINATION

Candidates must pass the written examination with a minimum score of 70%.  The examination is 70%of the final grade and you must have one the top one hundred scores including ties on the written examination to continue in the process.

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST

Candidates scoring within the top one hundred plus ties in the written examination will be invited to the physical agility test conducted by department personnel consisting of several phases of strength. endurance, and agility.

This is a pass – fail examination style. Failure to successfully complete any phase of the physical agility testing shall be grounds for removal from the hiring process.  Candidates will be photographed and weighed at this testing process.  The test consists of the following components: 

Ø     Scale a six foot wall

Ø     Vault three 30” hurdles

Ø     High crawl under three standard traffic barricades

Ø     Drag a 175 lb. dummy 50 feet

Ø     Bench press *

Ø     Sit ups *

Ø     300 meter run *

Ø     1.5 mile run *

* All of the physical agility testing requirements are designed to the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers Education and   Training Commission standards.  M.P.O.E.T.C. standards are gender and age based.
