EMS-Police Awards

Cheltenham Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Police Department members receive Lifesaving Awards for two successful rescues.
The first case involved a gentleman choking on a piece of meat that completely obstructed his airway. The Heimlich maneuver failed to clear the obstruction, and the patient went into cardiac arrest. Police officers performed CPR to maintain blood flow to the brain and heart. The arriving EMS team was able to remove the meat using special forceps and then resuscitated him by administering lifesaving drugs in addition to CPR.

The second case featured a man who collapsed after suffering a massive heart attack. Responding police officers used their automated external defibrillator to shock the patient. Upon arrival, EMS administered additional shocks and lifesaving drugs. The gentleman was released from the hospital several days later.

The emergency responders who received a Lifesaving Award at a recent EMS meeting in Elkins Park were (left to right, front) EMS Paramedic Joe McGinty, EMS Lt. Jessica Barto, EMS Emergency Medical Technician Carmen Del Bon, Police Officer Nick O'Connor, EMS Emergency Medical Technician Lisa Stoker, Police Officer Michael Davis, EMS Emergency Medical Technician Zach Clark, (back) EMS Paramedic Frank Boyle, EMS Paramedic Kurt Ritterbush, Police Officer Don Baldwin and Police Officer Ryan Murray. Also honored but not shown was Police Officer David Chiofolo.
