Winter Weather Reminders
Posted Date:
Winter cold is here and snow is sure to follow. Cheltenham offers residents these reminders about dealing with winter weather.
The Cheltenham Public Works Department is ready for winter’s arrival with the latest technology to defeat snow and ice. Primary snow removal vehicles are equipped to pre-wet road salt with magnesium chloride to accelerate the salt’s melting capability, especially in very cold temperatures. Public Works officials offer residents these tips for dealing with winter weather conditions:

•  First, all sidewalks – residential and commercial – must be cleared within 24 hours after snow has stopped falling, in accordance with a Township Ordinance. The cleared pathway must be at least 2 feet wide and thoroughly cleared of snow and ice or other obstructions. Also, a pathway of not less than 2 feet shall must be cleared to the street. Finally, handicapped access ramps must also be cleared to a minimum of passage of 2 feet. However, snow may not be piled into the street or on fire hydrants.
If the snow and/or ice on the sidewalk is frozen so hard that it cannot be removed without damaging the pavement, sand, salt or other suitable abrasive material must be spread on the sidewalk. But as soon as the weather permits (but no later than 48 hours thereafter), the abrasive material as well as all ice and snow must be removed from the sidewalks. Violators are subject to fines.
•  Residents are urged to park their cars in their driveways during inclement weather, so snow removal crews can plow curb-to-curb, clearing the widest possible path for traffic. Residents who must park in the street can avoid congestion and potential accidents by not parking opposite other cars or driveways.
•  Parked cars must be removed from Snow Emergency Routes whenever forecasts predict ice storms or snow accumulations over 2 inches. In addition, during snow emergencies, only vehicles with all-season/snow tires or chains are permitted to travel on Snow Emergency Routes.
•  As soon as snow or freezing rain starts to fall, crews begin to salt and cinder primary highways. Motorists should try to stay on these main thoroughfares. Plowing begins after 2 to 3 inches accumulates. Motorists should stay well behind plows and salt trucks to give them ample room to operate. After primary routes are clear, plowing begins on secondary streets.
•  During snowstorms, residents should check radio or television broadcasts for the latest alerts about the weather conditions. Community weather alerts will be posted on the Township website,  cable access channels 42 (Comcast) and 1960 (Verizon), Facebook page, and emailed via the Township’s E-Notifications. People interested in receiving township email alerts can sign up for E-Notifications via the township website. They may also sign up to receive all types of emergency notifications via

Finally, township officials ask residents to remain patient. Inclement weather slows snow crews as well as motorists. Residents’ cooperation will help the Township conduct an efficient snow removal operation.
