ELKINS PARK, PA, July 1, 2016 – At approximately 11:00 p.m. on July 30, a resident reported a gas odor in the area of Coventry Avenue and Valley Road. Elkins Park and Ogontz fire companies responded to find diesel fuel or fuel oil in the Mill Run tributary. The fire department called in the County HazMat team and worked with them to trace the illicit discharge to an unknown source in Philadelphia. Quick action by the Philadelphia water and fire departments, Cheltenham Township personnel and the County HazMat team, stopped the discharge from spreading past Asbury Road and Coventry Avenue.
Today Township personnel worked with the PA Fish and Boat Commission and the PA Department of Environmental Protection to identify the source of the illicit discharge, which was located in Philadelphia. Additionally, the Township hired Lewis Environmental to clean the waterway and stream banks. Quick action and team work prevented extensive damage to the downstream watershed and wildlife.
