Creek Contamination Follow Up

Lewis Environmental declared Tookany Creek and its streambank cleared of contamination as of 5PM on Tuesday, May 10.
As of  5PM on Tuesday, May 10, Lewis Environmental, an environmental remediation company that was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), officially determined that the Tookany Creek and its streambank were cleared of contamination and there had been no fish kills.

The remediation company worked since 10:45PM the prior night to address an illicit discharge into the Tookany Creek near Renninger Park in Glenside that occurred at approximately 5:30PM on Monday, May 9.  The discharge, which is still under investigation, appears to have been related to work by a contractor at Glenside Pool involving the water blasting and painting of the pool. The water blasting removed white paint chips from the pool. Although larger chips were captured on site, smaller chips were in water that emptied into a storm inlet near the pool, which drained into the Tookany Creek.

Once Cheltenham Township became aware of the situation, the pool project was immediately suspended, and DEP and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission were notified. Upon being made aware of the discharge, the Township Administration immediately secured the services of Lewis Environmental to remove the contamination.
