Since 1994, Cheltenham Township has honored the contributions of Township volunteers by presenting silver and gold certificates in recognition of 10 and 20 years of service.


Cheltenham Township has numerous citizen committees that tackle a host of wide-ranging issues.

Most members are volunteers who meet monthly or quarterly to discuss relevant matters and recommend actions to the Board of Commissioners. An exception is the Zoning hearing Board, which has paid members and independent authority.

The Commissioners created some of the committees in response to a particular issue, such as the committee on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Other address ongoing concerns, such as the Drug, Alcohol and Mental Health committee. Early each December the Board of Commissioners invites interested residents to apply for committee openings. Appointments are usually made during the Board reorganization meeting in January. Terms usually run from one to six years.

The following is a list of the current Township committees, their meeting times and brief descriptions of their duties:

The all-volunteer fire companies protect the lives and property of their neighbors, 24/7. Extensive training and safety equipment supplied.

Emergency Medical Service (EMS)

Volunteers supplement paid emergency medical technicians and paramedics

Auxiliary Police

Volunteers assist regular police by providing traffic and crowd control at special events and emergency scenes. Contact: 215-885-1600, ext. 439.

Town Watch

Join an existing Town Watch or start one in your own neighborhood by volunteering just 2 hours per month. Contact: 215-885-1600, ext. 482.

Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee

Helps ensure Township complies with federal law prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities.

Citizens Advisory Committee

Works on projects of interest and concern to a broad range of residents and as assigned.

Civil Service Commission

Advises Township Manager on recruitment, selection and promotion of all permanent, full-time, non-policy-making positions.


 

Drug, Alcohol and Mental Health Committee

Informs the public of available information and services regarding drug and alcohol problems and mental health issues.

Economic Development Task Force

Recommends policies and programs that will facilitate an increase in the tax base as well as promote economic development in the Township.

Historical Commission

Oversees operations at historic Richard Wall House Museum, offers historic programs and catalogues cultural resources.

Human Relations Committee

Advises on procedures and programs to encourage respect for the rights of all citizens.

LaMott Board of Historical Architectural Review

Makes recommendations on exterior changes to structures within the LaMott historic district.

LaMott Community Center Citizens Committee

Advises on the operation and programming at the LaMott Community Center.

Library Board

Supervises, maintains and operates the Township's library facilities.

Parking and Traffic Advisory Committee

Makes recommendations regarding traffic and parking.

Planning Commission

Makes recommendations on commercial and residential land developments and subdivisions and on Township land planning policies.

Rowland Community Center Citizens Committee

Advises on the operation and programming at the Rowland Community Center.

Shade Tree Advisory Commission

Makes recommendations on landscaping and trees for commercial and residential land developments and subdivisions and on Township-wide shade tree issues.

Twinning Committee

Recommends programs, events and projects to foster friendship with sister town Cheltenham, England.

Wyncote Board of Historical Architectural Review

Makes recommendations on exterior changes to structures within the Wyncote historic district.

Zoning Hearing Board

A quasi-judicial body that conducts public hearings and issues rulings on appeals from decisions of Township Zoning Officer.
