Volunteerism at the Library

Volunteers perform multiple roles in the Cheltenham Library System.

Some are visible as the friendly face behind the circulation counter. Others remain behind the scenes repairing books, inventorying current materials and typing new orders.

Seventy-five specially trained volunteers serve as tutors in the English as a Second Language Program. For several hours each week, tutors provide one-on-one English instruction to foreign-born adults using workbooks, visual aides and special newspapers. Since 1985, hundreds of adults have been helped by the program. For information, contact Kira Litvin 215-635-5000.

Each free library -- East Cheltenham, Elkins Park, Glenside and LaMott -- also has a volunteer "Friends" group that raises funds, sponsors special programs, helps improve library facilities and more. Although each Friends group concentrates primarily on its own library, the groups occasionally work in concert to promote legislative initiatives and strengthen the Library system as a whole.

The Library system can find a niche for almost any talent or interest. Volunteers represent both sexes and all ages, from teens to retirees. Anyone who would like more information about volunteering should contact the Library System director at 885-0457.
