Libraries Linked

Technology is changing the way people use Cheltenham libraries. MCLINC, the Montgomery County Libraries & Information Network Consortium, is turning your local library into a one-stop shopping center on the information superhighway.

Thirty-two public computer stations among the four Township libraries connect patrons to the MCLINC database that lists every item available at nearly all libraries in the county. The database simplifies searching for materials located at other libraries to just a few keystrokes.

The computers also link patrons to the world wide web, via Internet Explorer. A quick lesson on using the mouse and identifying screen icons is all that's usually required to launch even novices on the user-friendly system.

The new technology impacts all ages. Students keep the computers busy after school, but seniors hold sway during morning and early afternoon hours. Their feedback is actually helping refine the Polaris library software during these early months of MCLINC implementation.

Checking Out

Computerization has also simplified checking out library materials. New red and white library cards, featuring bar codes on the back, are being issued to all borrowers. The bar codes eliminate tedious and time-consuming alphabetizing and interfiling book cards. Staff can track the 140,000 items owned by Cheltenham libraries, and patrons can check what books they've borrowed via computerized patron records.

The Board of Commissioners contributed nearly $222,000 in startup costs to the MCLINC project. The enhanced service helps Cheltenham libraries better meet customers current and future needs.
